Combining 10,000 Homes with 10,000 Workspaces to Create ‘Workspace Neighbourhoods’ Where People Can Thrive
In 2021, Studio Woodroffe Papa in collaboration with BPD and Woonbedrijf completed their urban vision for 10,000 homes and 10,000 workplaces in Helmond.
Our study proposed a strategy for developing the post-industrial city by testing opportunities in strategic sites. From large industrial blocks to small plots in the inner fabric, the 12 locations presentspecific challanges the team has responded to in order to grant them with a distinctive character.
The largest sites correspond to two of the city’s former industrial compounds, located in the heart of Helmond. The project looked at retaining significant buildings and integrating new ones to increase density and create thriving new districts. Adjacent to the station, a large plot presents an excellent opportunity for integrating education, small maker spaces and housing. In the city centre small prots maximise density and create new pedestrian links that stenghten the local economy.
