Transforming a Former Chalk Quarry into a New Hill Town and Residential District

UK Developers Land Securities intend to realise 10,000 new homes in Ebbsfleet Valley together with 280,000 m2 of retail and leisure facilities, 560,000 m2 of offices, around 150 ha of open space, lakes and parkland, 5 new primary schools, a secondary school and health facilities.

We were selected to review the outline masterplan for Castle Hill, one of nine neighbourhoods within the plan, and to produce an architectural framework indicating densities, house types and material choices. The architectural framework is not meant to be prescriptive. Its main goal is to establish principles for the quantity, structure, and quality of public space in the area supported by architectural design guidelines for different residential buildings in the plan.

We proposed that Castle Hill could become a 21st century ‘hill-town’. Clear building edges establish the character and feel of the main public spaces. A network of public squares, waterfront promenades, mews, courts and lanes intensify the spatial diversity. Housing typologies respond to topography and their proximity to water.
